Counselling for Abuse Victims

Abuse can be referred to as a misuse of power that’s intended to control or harm another person. The maltreatment could be verbal, physical, or emotional. All kinds of abuse can cause both pain and psychological distress.

It is true that abuse can leave deep psychological wounds which are harder to heal compared to bodily injuries. Survivors of abuse generally have intense, negative feelings even long after the abuse has come to an end. Anxiety, trust issues and flashbacks are common in people that have experienced abuse. Perhaps, abuse can affect a person’s ability to find happiness and form relationships.

Good news is the effects of abuse don’t have to be permanent. A well qualified therapist or mental health counselor can help abuse survivors to overcome challenges as well as address symptoms.

There are several different types of abuse; but, the most prominent are sexual abuse and emotional abuse.

  • Sexual abuse – Any form of sexual contact that’s made without consent is sexual abuse. It includes rape, incest, child molestation or other acts of sexual violence.
  • Emotional abuse – It is a chronic pattern of manipulation intended to control another person. Usually, the tactics include isolation, verbal attacks, humiliation, or threats. Gaslighting may also be used to make the victim doubt their memories.
